Sundsvall

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Landinfra is planning to establish an offshore wind farm off the coast within Sundsvall Municipality and Sweden’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

Landinfra intends to apply for permits to establish an offshore wind farm within the maritime territory and the Sweden’s Exclusive Economic Zone. The investigation area for the planned wind farm covers approximately 526 square kilometers and is partly within the waters belonging to Sundsvall Municipality. The wind farm is expected to have a total installed capacity of up to 1,188 MW, distributed across 54–79 wind turbines.

A wind farm of this size could result in an annual electricity production of approximately 5.2 TWh. This amount of renewable electricity can not only secure local energy needs for upcoming electrification but also opens opportunities for local production of hydrogen and/or e-methanol—renewable energy carriers that can help local industries, shipping, and aviation phase out their fossil fuels.

The company has been working on the project since spring 2023 and has since conducted site investigations, early stakeholder dialogues, feasibility studies, and project evaluations.

The Sundsvall Wind Farm is one of the projects in the company’s portfolio of offshore wind projects that is considered to have the best conditions for offshore wind development.

Landinfra has therefore decided to move forward with the project and begin the formal permit process by initiating the scoping consultation for a forthcoming permit application.
Consultations for the planned activities will take place during the autumn and winter of 2024/2025 and will be conducted with the County Administrative Board, Sundsvall Municipality, and individuals who are expected to be particularly affected. Consultations will also be held with other national authorities, associations, organizations, and the public who may be impacted by the activities or measures.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE PROJECT

In the autumn of 2024, Landinfra will initiate the consultation process with the County Administrative Board and Sundsvall Municipality. The consultation will then continue with other national authorities, associations, organizations, and individuals who are expected to be particularly affected by the project. Public consultations are planned for the winter of 2024/2025.
